Steph eyed me every time our paths crossed while carrying the buckets. I could tell she wanted to ask me what happened with Watcher Brody, but she managed to keep her lips pinched together.

Eventually, she would ask me and I had no idea what I’d tell her. It wasn’t like I could tell her the truth. That I’d made a new friend.

To my surprise, she waited until we were alone in the cabin that night. I sat on the edge of my bed, knowing the questions were coming. Ivy and Jaci were lying in their beds, staring at the ceiling. They were waiting too.

Steph was staring at something outside of the window. Her eyes were probably glued to the Keepers as they discussed their days before turning in for the night.

The Keepers lived on the opposite side of the farms as the Watchers. It had probably always been done that way—designed to keep the Keepers and the Watchers separated.

“So,” Steph said, breaking the silence. Her foot tapped the floor. “We’re all waiting.”

“For what?” I asked with a shrug.

“Seriously, Cory? Are you kidding me?” Steph asked with her hands on her hips. “Why do you need to make everything so difficult?”

My eyes narrowed. The tension in the room was so thick I could reach out and feel it.

“What is that supposed to mean?” I asked. “What do I make difficult?”

Ivy snorted.

“I shouldn’t have to beg you to tell us what that was all about today. I mean, come on. A Watcher took you away to water his garden. When has that ever happened before?” Steph cocked a brow. “I don’t think Keeper Marie even fell for that nonsense.”

“That’s all it was,” I said. “You saw me leaving with the bucket.”

Steph crouched down by my knee. The muscles in her face softened slightly. “Are you in some kind of trouble? Do you need help?”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m not in trouble. Even if I were, what would you be able to do about it? I just had to carry water to that guy’s garden.”

“Were you scared?” Jaci asked.

I shrugged. “A little, I guess.”

“You were gone for a really long time,” Ivy muttered. “Big garden?”

“You didn’t tell him anything you shouldn’t have, did you?” Steph asked, her voice soft as she leaned closer.

“Of course not,” I said, getting to my feet. I walked over to the window and stared into the night. “You guys sound crazy.”

“Don’t you think it’s strange that you keep getting picked for everything?” Ivy asked, her bed squeaking as she sat up.

I didn’t turn to look at her. “I do, but I think it’s just a coincidence.”

“All this time and no one has ever brought water to a garden before,” Ivy said.

“They didn’t have gardens until recently,” I said. “I imagine we’ll have to do things like that more.”

Jaci grimaced. “I don’t want to be alone with a Watcher.”

“Don’t worry, Jaci. You won’t have to. The Blessings only rain down on Cory,” Ivy said, crossing her arms. “Special privileges for the girl who’s seen the whip more than anyone else on the farms.
